Traveler's Cheque

A traveler's cheque is a medium of exchange utilized as an alternative to hard currency. Travelers often use traveler's cheque on vacation to foreign countries. This is safer alternative to carrying cash when you are visiting foreign countries.

Advantages of Traveler's Cheque

  • Lost or stolen traveler’s cheques may be easier and faster to replace than a lost or stolen Forex card.
  • Traveler’s cheques may be cancelled and replaced easily. Traveler’s cheques are safer than carrying cash. Consumers that lose traveler’s cheques may call the issuing company and have them replaced. In most cases, the traveler may have them replaced within 24 to 48 hours. Lost cash may never be replaced.
  • Fees for traveler’s cheques are often less expensive than Forex card fees.
  • Traveler’s cheques may be exchanged for local currency for use in non-credit accepting establishments. Transportation companies or local family-owned establishments may not accept cards for payments. Traveler’s cheques offer consumers more vendor options.
  • Traveler’s cheques may be used as a budgeting tool. Consumers may buy only a certain amount of traveler’s cheques to control spending. Forex cards may be available for emergency purposes.

Having lot of advantages there are some cons to using traveler's cheque. It is not accepted by all vendors, and expenses are more difficult to track. With the advent of technology and plastic cards, the use of cheques is reduced and moved to using cards.
